Karen McFarlane Holman, Ph.D., is a chemistry professor at Willamette University and in 2010 she was awarded Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. She has been leading a research program on metal-based anti-cancer drugs for 20 years which you can learn more about in her TEDx talk in 2017. She has co-authored 24 scientific articles and book chapters, and is the author of Chapter 1 in The Power of Why: Why 39 Women Built a Membership Site and Why You Should Too which reached #1 Bestselling status on Amazon in four countries within three days of its release.

Professor K’s love of science education and community engagement extends worldwide with her Science Rockstar Kids program.  SRK is an online, interactive science platform that allows children to connect in a small “Zoom Lab” to carry out experiments together.  She also hosts free kids science challenges for the wider community and livestreams regularly on Facebook in her Make Time For Science series. Most recently she did a soft launch of an online experience called Cocktail Chemistry and the doors to this Tiki Bar-Lab have just opened.

A legit rockstar, Karen has performed on hundreds of stages over the past two decades. Karen currently plays guitar and sings in the raucous all-girl garage band Hot Sheets and the wildly upbeat rock trio City of Pieces. She has been co-hosting the podcast 10 Bestest since 2016 and has been a radio programmer since the late 1980s. Karen believes strongly in cultivating community, and she is the Founder of KMUZ-FM, the first community radio station in Salem, Oregon where she co-hosts the whimiscal program Radio Exotica.  More recently Karen has become a YouTuber where she offers unique ways to learn chemistry and science.
